Fresh Ink

It's about time for a new OM!!

I'm also excited to share some new poses! I'm working with the idea of equanimity... so I created one of my favorites, and one of my least favorite poses. While we all have poses that feel better or are "easier" than others, it's not really helpful to give them labels. So in an effort to honor both poses and erase any labels attached to them, I present Sugar Cane and Prayer Twist. (and no, I will not confess which is which!)

These images will be available in my shop soon.

What truly matters

As the end of the year approaches and holiday season begins, I like to take stock of what's important and what I'm grateful for. This year it's pretty easy - our son. I'm so very lucky and blessed to have a happy, healthy, and EASY baby. Insert cliche upon cliche here... being a mom is awesome.

Here's a great blog from Zen Habits about focusing on what truly matters. I love this blog- it's my new favorite! Enjoy! Oh, and happy Thanksgiving!

Is Bigger Better?

So, I'm currently finishing up a commission of LARGE-SCALE yoga images...which has been really fun and really challenging. I've completely changed the size that I work in. Folks, these are BIG. I've had to explore new brushes and techniques (a.k.a. an excuse to buy new art supplies!) which is always welcomed. I usually work fairly small- well within the borders of 8 x 10 inches. Now I'm seeing my images in a whole new way! Here's a shot of me working on the paintings, along with a sneak peek.......

"The aim of art... to represent not the outward appearance of things, but their inward significance." ~Aristotle

Kim Ensch's gorgeous floral paintings seem at first to be just simple studies of various flowers. But if you look a bit deeper, so much more is revealed. She's telling stories through her flowers, through the colors, the composition and the mood she creates.

For my 30th birthday Kim made the beautiful drawing above for me. It's very small, probably 3"x5", but Purple Coneflowers crowd the frame with so much energy and life. It's one of my favorites! I thought I'd share Kim's website- and Etsy shop-

Kim is participating in the ArtPrize event in Grand Rapids, MI where visitors vote for their favorite artist. The event goes September 23 - October 10 2009. Check out Kim's work at The Open Concept Gallery - 50 Louis St. NW in Grand Rapids.

Have I mentioned I'm available?

I'm available to do custom work, logo design, whatever you might need! I just finished a logo for Adele who teaches Anusara-Inspired Yoga for Kids. She calls it "Yoga of the Heart," which I love. Here's the painting I made to be her logo-

I've also done yoga pose requests in the past, so if you'd like a particular asana painted for yourself, or to give as a gift- just ask! email me at

New Print!! Urdhva Dhanurasana!

That's a mouthful! But "Wheel" is one of my favorite poses. This version has an extended leg which is challenging, to say the least... but its such a great pose for building strength in the arms and shoulders, while opening up the chest and back. I always feel like I can breathe a bit easier after this pose. This print is now available in my shop!

I've been painting again...

I broke out my paints, found inspiration and have several new paintings in the works. I suspect that my return to a (semi) regular yoga practice may have something to do with it. It's very humbling to return to yoga after many months of not being able to practice at all, and especially after having a C-section. Poses are different, my body is different, and it forces me to really stay in the moment and appreciate what I am capable of doing. Just returning to movement stirs the creative energy in me. I will share the new paintings very soon, I promise.

New Esty Shop!!

I'm very excited to announce that I am opening a New Etsy Shop!! No longer will yoga prints and jewelry mingle in my shop. The prints and cards now have their very own store, where I can focus on providing quality products and inspired designs. I'm calling this a "soft" opening, as I fill the store and create this store's look. For now, you can still get prints and cards in both shops, but in the very near future I will be switching over completely to And then we'll have a Grand Opening, complete with sales, special offers and maybe... some brand-new, never seen before images!

Stay tuned!

Mommy Necklaces!

What a great idea! The fabulous and very clever Raelynn of Mommy Necklaces makes these super pretty and durable necklaces that you can wear while having a little one. They're unbreakable, toxin-free, and let moms wear jewelry again. Especially helpful while baby nurses- keeps hands busy and baby focused.

I had the pleasure of meeting Raelynn and her staff, and participating in a photo shoot for her new product line. That's me in the pink shirt! I met some great moms there (and cute babies!) and we even made a mini-vacation out of the trip. Moms and jewelry... right up my alley!!

I'm back with news!!

I'm back from the land of new mommies! We have had a fun summer so far, getting to know our little boy and we even took our first family vacation! Now I'm back and feeling ready to start creating again. I'm back to sewing, and will post some pics soon. In the meantime (have you noticed I say that often?) here's a picture of baby and I, and I'll leave you with a teaser....

Some big changes are coming to my shop!!

Stay tuned for details!

My latest creation!

Our baby boy has arrived! Alistair Arthur made his way (reluctantly) into the world on May 18th. He's such a happy and calm baby, we are blessed.

Hopefully crafting and blogging will resume in the near future... In the meantime, here are some pictures!

Warm & Fuzzy

Hello! I'm just feeling all warm and fuzzy today, and thought I'd share. It's a sunny spring day, and more importantly, it's MAY!!! And that means baby is coming soon. My due date is May 16, so I know we'll meet him or her very soon. I cannot wait. I promise to post some pics when the time comes.

In the meantime... I'm working on a scrap quilt. Its fun to just put together various combinations of fabrics, without a lot of planning involved. CrazyMomQuilts proposed a one-a-day-quilt-along, and I'm going to try to keep up (though I'm not much of an official joiner). We'll see how it goes. But I am so enjoying sewing scraps together. It's a lot like collage. So here are some pics:

I do plan to make baby shoes next. I just need to find a thicker fabric for the soles, since I don't want to use leather. I was thinking denim, and I believe I have a pair of jean shorts in storage and I'm pretty sure I won't be wearing jean shorts (they're SHORT) this summer!!

And why not throw in some cute pics of the boys. Henry is enjoying the sunshine, and Jack recently let me put a mouse on his head. We joke that he has no personal boundaries, and you can do pretty much whatever you want to him. He sat there with the mouse on his head for quite a while while we laughed and laughed....

Hope you're enjoying a warm and fuzzy day, too!!!

Through Gina's Eyes

No new pics of what I'm up to lately, but I think i'm going to either work on a pair of baby shoes (sewn, not knitted) or start making a scrap quilt. We'll see.

Gina O'Brien covered bridge

But in the meantime, you can check out some gorgeous photography by Gina O'Brien. She just set up her Etsy shop, (take a look!) and you can see more of her work on her website. She has travelled all over and has many beautiful shots, and also has a great eye for capturing people in special moments. She shot my wedding and recently my big tummy. Here's a few of my favorite shots.

Pics pics pics...

This post will be full-o-pics! I'm still sewing, and I made a few fun projects. We've also finished up the nursery, and are ready for baby! I'm currently 36 weeks and off bedrest, so I can go to the fabric store on my own. Hooray!

Let's start with projects. First is my quilted placemat project, from the Sewing Republic. HERE is the link. They have a ton of cute project ideas over there, and I love that there is a video to help. So here's how my quilted placemat turned out:

Next up, a reversable shoulder bag from Lula Louise! I'm not sure I did it right, but it turned out just fine. There weren't any pics to help, so I did have to rip some seams and start over, but I did figure it out eventually. I decided on a magnetic snap closure so my junk doesnt fall out all over. Here it is... You can tell I LOVE my new fabric:

Of course, burp cloths continue but you don't need to see those. How about instead I show you some pics of the nursery?!! Here you go! We're happy with how it has turned out. It's super cozy and enjoyable to be in there. If you look closely, you can see prints from fellow Etsy folks- like Valentina Designs, Natasha Wescoat, and Nut and Bee. Now all we need is the baby!

Today's Project...

...a nursing cover! Why not? I like to give myself a little challenge and do something different, so today I tried this tutorail on how to make a nursing cover. Complete with a little pocket! I feel pretty good about it, and would say it's a success!!

I'm at 33 weeks now, and doc says I can go off bedrest next week. I'll be back to my usual schedule of... well, sewing and reading and relaxing. Oh well. By the way, I noticed today that the belly is starting to get in the way when I'm at my sewing machine. Not good!

Monday, March 30, 2009 friend Gail!

Gail Borowski
I decided a while back that I wanted to start sharing my artist friends on this blog. I have so many talented friends with skills so different from mine that I am often in awe of their abilities.

So please allow me to introduce my friend, Gail Borowski. Gail is a great friend I met at the Detroit Institute of Arts. She is patient and kind, and has a very quirky sense of humor. I was always excited to see our names scheduled together for the same shift!
Gail works on a fairly small scale, focusing a lot of detail and attention to the pieces she creates. Birds are a common theme in her work, and show up in various creative ways. I particularly love her silhouetted works that blend both graphic and realistic elements. They have a very modern feel, but also a sense of preciousness and nostalgia. I also am a lucky owner of a pair of her birdie earrings that are so adorable and perfect for a mama who is feathering her nest.
Check out Gail's website- to see (and purchase!) her beautiful work. She also has works at various galleries, and will be participating in an upcoming show... The ReUse Center is hosting its first annual Recycled Materials Art Show from March 22-April 22, 2009, at the ReUse Center in honor of Earth Day 2009. For detials check out: Gail will be showing jewlery that features found and re-purposed objects, as well as images of her paintings. Earrings, bracelets and pendants are currently on display. Gail would love to see you at the April 22nd reception!!
I keep bugging Gail to open an Etsy shop one of these days.... but I think she's doing just fine on her own!

The Latest...

As promised, here's a pic of the painting I made the other day. I'm not a painter, but I'm happy with the way it came out. Happy enough, anyway!
And here is a pillow I made to match the quilt. Thanks to Happy Things for the tutorial on using scraps to make pieced strip blocks. I loved using my scraps, and it gives a nice texture to the center of the pillow.
More projects coming soon!

Yoga Note Cards!

Finally! I'm very excited to offer 5 of my favorite and best-selling yoga images as notecards. You can check them out HERE in my shop! These are great to send to a friend or loved one. Or you can frame them as a mini print. Wouldn't they make a great little collection, hung salon-style on your wall? Perhaps one would be a perfect little gift for a special yoga enthusiast. Got another idea? Do share!

...and we're back!

My first quilt!!
The quilt is finished, and I'm really pleased with it. It's not perfect, but that wasn't the goal. A big thanks to Jen for helping me work it all out. 3 weeks of bedrest, done! Only 5 weeks more? we'll see. Apologies to those of you who were waiting on the edge of your seat to the see the finished quilt... (ha!) but my internet has been acting up. Perfect timing, when I have absolutely nothing to do. But we have temporarily fixed the problem, as much as we can without leaving me completely disconnected from the outside world.

I have also finished my first T-shirt to infant gown project! Thanks to This Mama Makes Stuff for the idea and the pattern! The first gown was Courtney's Dr. Pepper T-shirt that I had "borrowed." But he loved the outcome so much that he went to Salvation Army and picked up 5 more shirts for me to convert. Here is proud papa Courtney with the gown-

Also, I have been busy creating those bibs and burp cloths for Julie's fundraiser. I made a baker's dozen of each and she sold a good number of them at a craft fair this weekend. Here's a pic of the last set, a fun pink and yellow paisley design. Too cute! If you want a set, let me know and I will hook you up!

Coming soon... pics of the painting I made this weekend (nothing special, but a return to watercolors) and the new cards that I've been promising. They are great and I can't wait to list them in my shop.

OK, off to work on more baby gowns. Maybe the Cuba tshirt, maybe the Detroit Tigers 2005 shirt, or maybe the "Happy Birthday, Daddy" one in bright yellow. We'll see!
