Black and White Cookie Time!

Vegan Black and White Cookies

Just got back from New York (where I saw my friend on Broadway in Jersey Boys- awesome!), and wanted to share my new favorite treat!! I've heard of the famous "Black and White Cookie" but had never tried one. And my cat has the nickname "black and white cookie cat" (I know, not much of a nickname, but we like it) so I thought it was time to try it. So I did a little Etsy search and found VeganHoney who makes VEGAN BLACK AND WHITE COOKIES!!! http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=11123691

They sell them at a great little coffee bar in Greenwich Village called Gizzi's, so I stopped by to have a taste. Deeee-lish!! Thanks, VeganHoney!!!!!

That's me enjoying my new favorite snack.

Birds n Bees

"Abeille" by MothtoaFlame.etsy.com

I've menioned I'm a gardener- of flowers, herbs, vegetables... So this whole bee crisis worries me. According to sources, both honeybees and butterflies are disappearing. Apparently in London, swallows have disappeared! The culprit is unknown, but there are lots of theories. In 2005, the Varoa mite was blamed for the loss of half (50%!) of the American bee population. The crisis continues, and the mite theory continues, but some are wondering if pesticides are to blame, or perhaps GMO plants don't produce the "right" kind of pollen, and then there is the theory that cell phone towers disrupt their navigation.

Even Haagen-Dazs is concerned! They have a website- http://www.helpthehoneybees.com/ and a new flavor of ice cream... Vanilla Honey.... that benefits honeybee research.

So here's how we can help....(from Sally Morton at Suite101.com)

1. Plant heirloom varieties of plants and veggies. No more GMO varieties! I order from http://www.seedsavers.com/

2. Use organic and natural methods of gardening pest control instead of commercial pesticide. Commercial pesticides kill beneficial insects as well as the pest, and seeps down into the soil and contaminates it.

3. Use natural and organic methods to improve your gardens. Commercial fertilizers also seep into the ground and comtaminate, creating "dead zones" where NOTHING grows. Think compost, companion planting, etc.

4. Make your garden attractive to bees and butterflies! Try the following- butterfly bushes, lavender, sunflowers, thyme, cosmos, coneflowers, wysteria, coreopsis, and lemon balm.

It wasn't intentional... I chose this charm becuase I find the I-Ching fascinating and who doesn't want more yin/yang balance in their life?? But.... then I realized I had created a Dharma Initiative necklace. Has Ben gotten to me, too??!!

I love the combo of warm colors... good for passion, creativity, strength, confidence. There is a cool color combo- will be posted soon.

New Studio!

I've had many studios- a corner of my bedroom, a closet-sized studio in grad school, a full sculpture studio, and now my 3rd bedroom. But..... we are currently in the process of finishing our basement, and we are custom building a studio for me!! Hooray!

Our friend, J, is a carpenter and loves projects, so he is doing all of the work for us for free. We pay him in pizza, beer and good company.
Here is where we're at right now....
Doesn't look like much, but it will, soon enough. I'll post when it's all done!

"Dreaming of a Friend"

copyright rogol vita

I'm really excited about my latest etsy purchase! I saw this photograph featured on the front page of etsy a few weeks ago, and I couldn't stop thinking about it.

Of course I love cats, but something about this image just had such an emotional impact on me. The mood that is set is very quiet, very lonely, but hopeful... I love it. PhotoVita (http://photovita.etsy.com/) is a very talented photographer, indeed. She also has a great promo going on- first 10 buyers get a free print of whatever image they like. Hooray!

Speaking of cats... I helped a mama cat give birth at the shelter last week. Well, I helped as much as I could, anyway. It was amazing and beautiful. Here's a photo of her with her beautiful little kitties. I was so proud of her hard work, and inspired by her motherly instincts. They kicked in as soon as the first baby arrived.- she knew exactly what to do! Nothing is as sweet as a freshly born mewing kitty. awwww.....

Feeling Sunny!

Sources tell me that YELLOW is all the rage...

I felt like making something simple and sunny... in honor of spring, which I think has finally arrived here in Michigan.

These are the cutest little faceted yellow discs. I found them suffocating in a glass case at the thrift store, and I knew they needed a revamp. It's good to recycle old, tired jewelry. It's good to recycle, period!
