Art Every Day- Day 30

Well, today is the last day of "Art Every Day Month." A big thank-you to everyone who gave me support and encouragement. You don't know how much it means to me.

Don't worry, I'm not going to stop making art. And I'll keep posting about it. I've learned that it is actually pretty easy to carve out time to do what's important. Decide what you're going to do, and just do it. I challenge everyone who followed me through this to pick one thing that you'd like to do more of (or that would be good for you to do more of!) and commit to do a little of it every day for a month. Too long? Do a week.  My next challenge is a daily meditation practice.  My practice is spotty at best.  One's practice has to be consistent to have any real benefit. So that's my next goal- first a week, then a month of every day meditation. Maybe I'll blog about it!

So here is today's art. It's a collaboration with my son. He was painting and I loved what he created, so I scanned it, mirrored it and adjusted the color. There's something really delicate and beautiful about it. Like butterfly wings that turned into flowers. It really moves me, I think it is just so intensely beautiful. I hope you enjoy!

Art Every Day- Day 29

I got crafty today. I was inspired by this blue felted acorn ornament I bought a few years ago on Etsy. Sadly, the seller is no longer there! Otherwise, I would share her shop with you. But if you search "felted acorn ornament" you can find all kinds of goodies.

I took a slightly different approach and wound colored yarn into tight balls, then popped them into the empty acorn tops. I used a craft glue and let them dry overnight. Then this morning I hot-glued (I know, I know...) the ribbons on. The original felted ornament has a much more elegant way of attaching the ribbon that includes drilling a little hole.  But my way is good enough for our tree!

Art Every Day- Day 28

I've shared before how much I love bees. I just think they're amazing. Over the weekend, I saw my first "November Bee." That's a bee still buzzing around in November. When I lived in PA, we used to joke about the "September Bees" that were on their last leg and would bump into your face. Bless their hearts, they just couldn't find any more flowers. I created this illustration using hand-cut stamps (what a brilliant idea!) and an India Ink pen.

Art Every Day- Day 27

We were going to go to the zoo, but we ended up at the pet store instead. The goldfish were jam-packed in their tank, swimming around like crazy! The colors were too good to ignore. I played a bit with some filters and processing in Photoshop to get these images. I love the high-contrast look on the left, and the "shrink wrapped" filter on the right made me laugh and cringe at the same time. I always tell my students that good art creates a reaction- good or bad... but never indifferent.

And I couldn't resist sharing a photo of these gorgeous eggs.  I love eggs fresh from the farm, especially when they are varying sizes, shapes and colors. Look at that blue egg up front!  Have you ever tried local farm eggs? I was shocked how bright the yolks are and how rich the eggs taste.

Don't forget to like my post about the sticker give-away... I'll enter you in the drawing!!  www.facebook.com/lindsaysatchelldesigns

Sticker Giveaway!

See - I really do have the "BREATHE" sticker (along with an "Updog" sticker) on my laptop! Would you like one? Tomorrow night (Nov 28th) at 7pm I will draw a name from any Facebook like, comment, or share on the posts about the giveaway. Good luck!

Art Every Day- Day 26

I give in. I'm a totally bird nerd, there's no use fighting it. I've been wanting to draw this winter cardinal for a while, and today was the day. I used my beloved Prismacolors in my sketchbook. The pages have a lovely off-white color and they are so smooth in texture. That allows the colored pencils to glide around, laying on thick and blending like butter.

I finished him while the boys slept - I wore Alistair out on a tour of Aiken County parks. He sure loved this park with all wooden structures. Isn't it cool?

Art Every Day- Day 25

Tweet Tweet!
Now you can follow me on Twitter!
Isn't she a cute little birdie? I painted her today.
Yes, it's the Twitter logo. Do you think they'll mind?

I also created these stickers today, whaddya think? They're vinyl stickers, so they can go on your laptop, your fridge, your wall, your bumper (no really! I did it!)... just about anywhere! How can you get one of these great stickers? Stay tuned... I'll let you know!

Art Every Day- Day 24

Happy Thanksgiving!  I've heard versions of this quote all week: "Happiness does not create Gratitude; rather Gratitude creates Happiness."  Seems to be true.

Today's top 5 things I'm grateful for:

- a beautiful family
- a belly full of delicious foods, most of which was cooked by beautiful husband
- amazing technology that allows us to connect and share incredible things
- all of my teachers who have ever taught me anything
- time and inspiration to paint this little guy:

It's a ruby-throated hummingbird. We used to get dozens of them at our feeders, but I haven't seen any at this new house. I miss those little guys. Guess I'll have to be grateful for the mockingbirds.

Art Every Day- Day 23

It's a holiday week, so today's art for the day is a simple gesture. Alistair and I glued leaves to the window to give us a pretty view.  We haven't seen any birds at the feeder in a while, and the flowers in the hanging basket are dead. So why not some pretty leaves? I used a glue stick to stick them up, which will wash off no problem when we're tired of leaves.

Art Every Day- Day 22

OK, today's art is way too crafty, even for me.  It's so silly that it's almost cute.  And I confess... I used a hot glue gun to put on those buttons. I know, I know... I'm so ashamed. That was one of many rules in my 3-D Design class at Wayne State University. NO GLUE GUNS. Because they're lame, they leave strings everywhere, and it's a shortcut. (Another rule I had was to never use the term "pop" as in "make it pop." A rule I violated on Day 15.)  But I have company coming in a few hours, a hungry toddler and a 3 month old baby, so I forgive myself.

Art Every Day- Day 21

OK, here it is! I finished up that fabric chain garland today. I don't know why I'm so into making holiday decor (more projects to follow...), it's not like me! Maybe because it's a good excuse to sew! A few pics of the garland quickly thrown up on the mantel:

And I'm super excited to share a project I've been working on for a few weeks now!  I was asked to design a logo for the lovely Andy, owner of Yogaahhh...LLC in Anderson, SC.  Isn't that a great name? As in, "yoga, ahhh..." She asked me to create two poses as well as the font. I had a great time working with her and discovering all that we have in common. We're both SC transplants from MI, and both had babies this past July, and know a few of the same yoga folks from back home. So thank you, Andy, for the opportunity to create more art, and for being such a fun email pal!

Art Every Day- Day 20

More hexagons, different medium. My lovely Prismacolors on Canson's Mi Tientes paper.  Are you thinking what I'm thinking? Time to give stained glass a try, right?
I also started a sewing project for the holidays. One of my favorite things to do as a kid with my best friend, Jennie, was to make an advent paper chain. I saw this fun idea on Pinterest to make a chain out of fabric strips! This will be perfect across my mantel. I'm only partway done... I will be sure to post when it's finished.  If you see any other fun holiday crafts, let me know!

Art Every Day- Day 19

Still lovin on my hexagons. I cut a few more, played with them while my hubby made pancakes this morning.  I just love the way the colors vibrate next to each other and how the facets snug right up next to each other.

I also finger painted with my son. That counts, right?

Art Every Day- Day 18

Back to hexagons today. There's something really exciting to me about the relationship of shapes to one another, especially when there's some space between them. Like Miles Davis said, "Don't play what's there, play what's not there."  Rather Zen, don't you think? Actually, it's rather Taoist... Here is my favorite chapter from the Tao Te Ching:

Tao Te Ching - Lao Tzu - chapter 11

Thirty spokes share the wheel's hub;
It is the center hole that makes it useful.
Shape clay into a vessel;
It is the space within that makes it useful.
Cut doors and windows for a room;
It is the holes which make it useful.
Therefore profit comes from what is there;
Usefulness from what is not there.

Art Every Day- Day 17

I'm not a painter.  My drawing skills are pretty decent and I have a good sense of color, but I am not a painter. I am a sculptor. I think three-dimensionally, and my BFA and MFA are in sculpture. But a bandsaw, welding tanks, and a kiln don't exactly fold up neatly when the kiddos wake up from their naps. They're also slightly more expensive than paints, paper and pens. So I use what makes sense right now. And that's paint, colored pencils, and ink.  Having said that, here is today's painting of flowers. Or, part of it anyway.  I'm not particularly proud of it, but what the heck. They can't all be winners.
To make up for it, here are some pics of our amazing sky tonight. All pinks, oranges and purples.

Art Every Day- Day 16

Few things give me more joy to look at than my Prismacolors all in a row. Sigh. I yuv them. A simple little doodle today... sick baby and sick mama make for very little art time. Not that it stopped me!!

Art Every Day- Day 15

I got an early start today. You can see my morning tea next to my paint water - a very dangerous thing for an artist to do! Never put your drink next to your water. Alistair joined me and painted his own work of art.
I've been looking at hexagon (or honeycomb) quilts a lot lately. Maybe it's because I love bees, maybe because strict geometry really appeals to me, or the fact that it's amazingly difficult to create.... but I'm fascinated.  I will never be that kind of quilter, and it's OK. Instead, I created a paper quilt of sorts.
I love how the colors really pop on that black background.

Art Every Day- Day 14

Hello there! Here is today's art: a new owl stamp. I have plans to start working bigger with printmaking but for now I'm working on a small scale. If you place an order from my shop, you may just find some owls on your package!!

It's been 2 weeks now of making art everyday, and I've learned a few things:

- In order to find a few extra minutes to do anything, TURN OFF THE TV.
- If you have a supportive husband and family, you can do way more than you thought you could.
- Making more art, not necessarily better art, makes you a better artist.
- Inspiration is everywhere if you're open to it showing up in unexpected ways.

By the way, Pilates Prints are up in my shop! Hooray!!

Art Every Day- Day 13

Day13 is another photo. (It was a long weekend...) The leaves here in Aiken are so gorgeous right now, they were begging to be photographed. I regret missing an opportunity to capture a row of orange trees along a red dirt road the other day. So I didn't want to pass up these red leaves.

When you realize how perfect everything is, you will tilt your head back and laugh at the sky. ~The Buddha

Art Every Day- Day 12

I'm really drawn to patterns in nature. The way leaf shapes repeat, how rows of corn line up, how spots on a giraffe relate to each other. It's never exactly the same, but it can be predictable in its  consistency. Variations on a theme, which creates a type of visual rhythm. Anyway, that's something I'm thinking about when I'm in nature. Which I was today, taking pics of the turning leaves. I also whipped up this giraffe painting, based on one of the lovlies at our zoo in Columbia. Did you know their tongues are blue?!! We took a vote in my house, and the decision was 'no tongue' in the painting. There you go-- art by committee.

Art Every Day- Day 11

Some days I'm not sure how I'm going to be able to create any art... with two little boys, two visitors this week, working on a commission for a client...   But then I find just a few minutes to pick something that interests me and do what I can. My expectations are pretty low, so I'm allowing myself to explore new things. And often something unexpectedly fun happens. Today I took a photo of my favorite scarf, printed it out and drew on the photo, scanned it, inverted the colors... and voila! Art!

Art Every Day- Day 10

I saw this super cute tutorial  from Curly Pops for a superhero headband, and I had to try it out.  It was pretty easy to make, now that I have a my new machine. I still LOVE my old machine that was my grandma's (I think it might be older than I am!),  but this new machine is pretty awesome.

Alistair let me try it on him to check the fit for exactly 10 seconds. No really, we counted. It's actually a gift for a special little girl, so Shhh!!! Don't tell!!  And that's my art for today.

Art Every Day- Day 9

Day Nine... I only had a few minutes at the dentist's office before they started stabbing my gums. I created this little doodle, then copied and pasted it on top of itself a few times to get something interesting. One of the Principles of Design I love... Repetition!!!  A bit Mandala-like, don't you think?

Art Every Day- Day 8

I had a wonderful massage today that has me icing my arm and taking ibuprofen. Youch.  So just a quick little sketch today - I made sure to carve out 15 minutes to create at least something.
Pretty good, huh?  Just kiddin. That's Bernini's sculpture "The Ecstasy of St. Teresa." It has always been one of my favorites and piqued my interest in the saint. So I'm currently reading The Autobiography of St. Teresa of Avila, and here is my little tribute to her. It looks rather pathetic next to Bernini's masterpiece, but oh well. That's what you get with 15 minutes and a bum arm.

Art Every Day- Day 7

"Once upon a time, I dreamt I was a butterfly, fluttering hither and thither, to all intents and purposes a butterfly. I was conscious only of following my fancies as a butterfly, and was unconscious of my individuality as a man. Suddenly, I awoke, and there I lay, myself again. Now I do not know whether I was then a man dreaming I was a butterfly, or whether I am now a butterfly dreaming that I am now a man." -Lao Tsu, Tao Te Ching

Art Every Day- Day 6

My sweet friend Jen sent me some packets of dried lavender in the mail, stinking up my mailbox something GOOD!  It was heavenly. So today I made a few projects, and one was a lavender sachet for my drawer.

Before you dare say sewing isn't art, check out some of these!!!  For the sources of these amazing works of art, check out my "Sewing Inspiration" board on pinterest-http://pinterest.com/lindsaysatchell/

Full disclosure: I am working on a commissioned piece for a client, so I have been painting and drawing. But I can't post it. Not yet, anyway...  ;-)
