A new beginning

When I start a new piece, I don't know what it will look like when it's finished. I'm an intuitive artist; I let the work reveal itself. I know, that sounds so artsy and non-specific. What I mean is that from one choice to the next, I follow my instincts. I follow what feels right, what interests me enough to keep going. I take breaks and just look, trying to sense what comes next. And I allow accidents to happen. Like Bob Ross, I enjoy a happy little accident. I am all about wabi-sabi and finding perfection in imperfection.

So here is a look at my new drawing as it develops. It's inspired by the chrysanthemum and repetition of its petals. I'll share more as it develops!

December orders

Hello, world!

We survived the worst stomach flu outbreak I can remember! Yikes! So I've been under the weather and not much for communication in the past week or so. But my shop remains open, orders are steady and I'm happy and healthy again. Whew.

Just wanted to let everyone know that I'm a fast shipper-  orders usually go out the next day. But I'll be closing up shop on December 21st. So get those orders in now! Looks like my most popular item this year is a tie between the yoga notecard variety pack and the pilates notecard variety pack. Which team are you... team yoga or team pilates? Ha ha, just kidding... there are no teams...

Stay healthy, my friends!!

That's the holiday spirit!! Gotta love brotherly affection.

Practice makes Practice

"If you only practice once a week, then you're just using Shakti (energetic force or spark) to move you forward. You have to practice more than that to make any real progress."

That's more or less what my teacher told me this weekend. I've been going to yoga class about 2 times a week, and not practicing at home. And I'm having trouble with muscle cramps and instability in my core. So she's right. If I want to move my practice forward and make real progress, I have to commit to more regular practice.

Isn't this true of anything? I know it's true for making art. If I wait until I'm inspired to make art, I won't be making much art. And if I don't make much art, nothing new or interesting happens. It's a discipline, a commitment to my art to get in my studio and work. And the more I create, the more I am inspired to create. Whether something exciting happens or not, I must work.

And if I want change and transformation to happen in my yoga practice, I must get on my mat.
Latest work in my studio. Watercolor and colored pencil on wood.

FYI, maybe you've noticed I haven't been using my FB page much lately. Most likely you haven't noticed, because FB stopped sharing my posts with all of my fans. I don't really understand the changes, but I know only about 10% of my fans see what I post. So look for announcements and updates here on my blog! Feel free to subscribe- I promise not to jam up your inbox.

Wishing you a steady practice of whatever makes you happy!!

Pintervention

Are you addicted to Pinterest? I found myself spending way too much time there, so last Spring I decided to take a break. I don't pin much anymore, lest I get swept away in a shame spiral comparing myself to other moms. So I had to laugh when my crazy, ahem... I mean creative cousins made this video about staging a Pintervention. Enjoy. And get off Pinterest if it makes you feel bad. As my good friend says, "If it's not fun, don't do it."

Slow Down!

Slow down, you move to fast. You gotta make the morning last!

This song has been in my head all morning and I just slowed down enough to actually listen to it.
How can we live a mindful life if we never slow down? "Don't just do something, Sit There!!"

If I hadn't slowed down, I might have missed this Giant Leaopard Moth Caterpillar!!
One thing I know I want for my children is for them to know  how to enjoy the moment. I think he's getting the hang of it. (But sometimes I think he's really just teaching me. Children are like that. )

Inspired

Last night my husband and I went to some galleries here in Asheville. The River Arts District is a fabulous collection of studios and galleries with a few breweries and restaurants thrown in for good measure. I was so inspired to see new work and artists working in their studios... so much that I finally finished unpacking my own studio and got to work on a new piece!

Big News... for the first time ever, I'm selling an original yoga painting in my shop! This painting has never offered been as a print, though it is reproduced in the yoga 5-pack variety notecards.  It's from the very first year that I started painting them, in 2002. Back then I used the name "elle" to sign my work because I was still developing as an artist and hadn't yet found my voice. It's matted in white and ready to put in an 8x10 frame. Isn't she lovely?
Head on over to my shop and take a look. Wouldn't you love to own an original?

Bluebird Video

Finally!  I have been trying to finish this for months. I started last spring, and then the summer got away from me. Then we found out we were moving, then the move overtook everything and we're just now getting settled.

Then yesterday, I was browsing around the interwebs and found this lovely blog, Falling Ladies, and saw her fun videos. And I thought, "Hey! Whatever happened to that Bluebird Painting video I was working on months ago?!  You know, the one where I took video of the whole process of painting and drawing it?" You've seen the end result:

So I put a few finishing touches on, and here you go.  Almost perfect, except for some audio issues at the end. Oh well... Wabi sabi, my friend. Perfection in Imperfection.  Enjoy!

Instagram Me

I know I'm late to the party, but I just joined Instagram. I was against it for a long time because overuse of filters annoys me. It seems so false and I don't like things that aren't genuine. Plus it lowers appreciation for true photographic skill and technique.

However... I am really working on being less judgmental and accepting things I don't like. It's the Buddhist in me, striving for equanimity.

So I started an account under the name lindsaysatchellart. I don't know how to invite you, yet. But I'm active. Does anyone else use it? Got any tips??

When the Pupa is ready...

Remember this post ? Well, I forgot to tell you the rest of the story! I was so lucky to witness one of nature's most beautiful and amazing transformations. And to share it with Alistair was so much fun. It was pretty adorable when he would wake up and say "Mama, can we go look at the chrysalis?"

So... Mr. Caterpillar was eating like crazy until one day, he kept leaving the plant and ending up in weird places. I kept putting him back on the plant (because I like to interfere with nature, silly human that I am!) not realizing that he was searching for a good place to set up camp. He finally found the right spot and got all set and hung upside down. Then his body started blistering and puffing up. It was insane. This whole process happened within an hour. I kept running back to see what was happening next! Here are a few pics during the process.

Pupa state, blistering, bubbling, finally a chrysalis.
Then he was in his chrysalis for about 9 days. In those nine days, we moved to North Carolina. I checked whether or not a Gulf Fritillary could survive in Asheville, and it looked good. So I packed him up and drove 3 hours to our new home.
Me driving with all my plants and critters. I had a
chrysalis, 2 caterpillars and a fish in the car with me.

We were so excited for him to emerge!  On the ninth day, it started to turn a bit dark, and I was afraid he hadn't made it. It was getting colder in the evenings here in the mountains, so I put it in the garage overnight in case he was still alive and needed to stay warm. But I had pretty much given up all hope.

The next morning my husband was in the garage going through boxes when he suddenly yelled, "Lindsay! Get out here right now!!" He had caught the butterfly emerging! It was amazing. It's a slower process that I had expected. Apparently they have to let their wings unfold and dry off before they can fly. It also seemed to me that he needed to get his sea legs.
Just emerged, wings still folded.
Wings stretching out, happy to be free!
I watched him toddle around on the branches of his passionflower for a bit, then he was gone. Hopefully he found a mate and lived happily ever after! Such a cool process.
The beautiful Gulf Fritillary next to a caterpillar about to undergo his own transformation.
I'm so glad I transplanted that passionflower when I found it growing wild. I had NO IDEA what was in store!! It made me want to sing "The Circle of Life" or something. Maybe get a passionflower and Gulf frit tattoo?? We'll see...

Making our house a home

We made it! Mostly unpacked and starting to feel like home...  But I was feeling like I needed to add a little handmade touch. So I found a fun tutorial and made this fun fall wreath from craftaholicsanonymous. I used felt instead of burlap, but its the same idea. You can change out the decorations to keep the wreath going from season to season. (Or if you get bored!)

I also unpacked all my art and shop supplies - so the shop is back open!!!  Come take a look. Coming soon... holiday gifts and specials. Sheesh, can you believe it? Holidays already?!?!

I just HAD to share this delightfully pink party we went to yesterday! It was princess themed and full of beautiful details and photo opps. I will probably never throw a pink princess party (2 boys here) but perhaps some of you will!  And of course I'm ALL FOR crafting your own decorations and getting creative.  My friend Kimberly went above and beyond to create this great party. She is my crazy crafty friend!!

Birthday Fun for Finn

We're spending a few days in the NC mountains with the boys' grandparents. Alistair and I picked flowers to create a bouquet for Finn's 1st birthday. Good grief, has a year passed already??! We collected the scraps in a basket for play and then decorated Mr. Squirrel. I think he's happy.

Here are my silly boys, playing in puddles and drawing with chalk. Finn's first drawings--I'm beaming with pride!! The next day I discovered the footprints...
Happy Birthday, Finny!

I, Naturalist

I have something I want to share with y'all! (yes, the ubiquitous and useful phrase has made its way into my daily vocab. I surrender.) You know I'm a nature lover, especially flowers, birds and bees. Well, a friend hipped me to a site called iNaturalist.org where you can post observations and learn all about the species you find! And you can follow other people's observations, ask for IDs on things you're not familiar with. It's so cool. Check it out - and follow me on iNaturalist.org!

See this tree? Looks like an ordinary tree, right?
Look closer. What are those little fruits? Why, they are delicious figs!! Take 'em right off the tree! OMG, so sweet and tender. I've never had figs right off the tree before.
I posted this observation on iNaturalist.org, and discovered that Fig trees (not their real name) are related to Ficus trees! Who knew? (Well, arborists, of course.)

And I met these lovelies from my backyard last week. Eastern Tiger Swallowtail and Spicebush Swallowtail, meet my readers. Readers, meet these gorgeous Swallowtails. That's my Lantana they're enjoying. I have future plans for a dedicated butterfly garden. Welcome, friends!

Circle Series

OK, here they are! I'm really excited about this new series. Circles have long been important to me. When I was making sculpture, most had circular forms. My drawings have almost always included circles. There's something about the perfection of a circle (Aristotle agreed!) that feels good to me. It's complete, it never ends, it symbolizes both fullness and emptiness at the same time.

Another aspect of this series is the organic repetition of form. Like corn growing on a cob or pebbles piling together along a shore, I'm really interested in how things grow together and exist side-by-side.

This series also is a study in color mixing and neutrals.

I'll be adding them to my Etsy shop soon. I'm selling the originals; no prints will be available. They're truly one-of-a-kind! If you're interested and would like me to reserve one before they get listed, send me an email at: lindsaysatchell@gmail.com

Happy 4th of July!

Happy 4th of July!
We are looking forward to bike riding with friends, a yummy picnic, and some fireworks.
Here's a little painting I did of Old Glory.
I have a lot of goals for this week while my husband is home from work, so we'll see how much I actually can achieve. I am planning to scan and list several new paintings this week; I'm super excited to share them all. Plus create some new paintings, do tons of laundry, re-organize closets, move some plants outside, upload pics from our vacation.... sigh.
Enjoy your holiday!!

observations

My good friend Christina of Christina Cipriano Photography stayed with us recently.  She is CONSTANTLY taking pictures of everything around her. She reminded me how beautiful and amazing the world is, especially if you stop to observe and appreciate. Here are a few of my recent observations.
 My airplant is blooming!
Hardy Waterlily and a Brown (?) Water Snake
Such a pretty Waterlily
 Fungus. Don't know any details...
Beautiful how they grow up the branch!
