Growing Things

Well hello there!
Guess who is 9 months old? This lil squirt.  I keep feeding him and he keeps growing.
I don't have much of a garden this year - vegetable or otherwise. I did relocate some Lantanas and added some Vincas (The Grumpy Gardener's advice) for color. And a friend had some Big Boy and Brandywine seedlings, so those are growing happy in the Carolina sunshine. But that's it. This mama has learned when to say enough. And I know that someday I'll have time to get out in the dirt again.

In the meantime, I'm collecting houseplants! Check out these airplants from Augury on Etsy.
And one "volunteer" plant out in the backyard - evidence of my son's box of beans he likes to dig in. There's a beanstalk growing! Let's see how big it gets before it succumbs to toddler stomping or husband weed-wacking.
Happy Gardening to those of you who are getting dirty this season!!

Mother's Day Cards

Mother and Child cards are now in my shop.  Here's the link!!  They really look great, the colors are a soft blue and purple, so you can send it to a mom that has a boy, girl, or both!
Mother's Day is coming up quick. I don't know about you, but it always sneaks up on me and I'm running out last minute to get a card. Not this year! Although it may not be a surprise to mama this year... she has seen this image before...  In fact, she has a whole collection of mother/child artwork from me. One year in college I made my own paper and made an intaglio print on it. I was very inspired by traditional Renaissance mother/child imagery at the time. Maybe I can get her to take a pic of it to share.

Pinterest Love

I thought I'd share some of my Pinterest boards with you today!  In the spirit of "Meditations on Art, Yoga and Motherhood," here are my boards for Art, Yoga and Kids.  If you haven't used Pinterest before (where have you been?!?!!), it's a way of pinning and organizing photos from websites, blogs, etc. so that you have a virtual bulletin board of ideas that link right back to the source. SO cool, and very addicting. You were warned.

Tuesday Treasury, Batik Update, and a Cheap Thrill

EAT PRAY LOVE is one of the loveliest treasuries I've ever been included in! I love the colors, the tone, the mood...Check out those macaroons, for Pete's sake!

Batik update: My first waxing and dipping is complete.
I'm going to stop with this fabric (at least that's what I think right now!):
It's a subtle, pale sea foam green with swirls and I like it as is. But that could always change.

Here's the second piece, which will get waxed again (not sure what pattern yet) and then dipped in dark blue. The best part is having no idea what it will look like until it's done. This is probably my favorite aspect of creating - playing around to see what I get. It's an information gathering period that is just so satisfying. Then after I really understand the whole process, I'll begin making more deliberate designs and patterns.

One last thing - have you heard of these crazy water beads? I guess they're used by florists in vases to hydrate flowers. But they're also super fun for kids (old enough not to eat them!) to play with. Alistair loves to have them in his bathtub. They start out super small and then "grow" into the size of gumballs. They're squishy, boucey, cold, slippery little guys. Feels so nice on your fingers. You can find them at Michaels, Jo-Anns, etc., or online. Cheap fun!

It's time for batik.

I've got my wax melting, my fabrics prepped, my tjanting tools are ready to go. Baby is sleeping and toddler is riding bikes with daddy. All the planets seem to be aligned for me to make some art. Let's Go batiking!

*just FYI: photo 1 is my wax - equal parts beeswax and paraffin. photo 2 is mulin; pre-washed and some is dyed already. photo 3 is of my tjanting tools, used to draw the wax on the fabric. All shiny and new; not for long!
